Talking about your care
Why it is good to talk about care
It is never too soon to think about what you would like to happen if you become ill, or if your health condition changes.
Having these conversations with the people close to you can help them understand what matters to you and how you would like to be cared for.
Planning ahead
There are situations where it may feel more important to make plans, such as after being diagnosed with certain health conditions. However, you do not have to be unwell to start talking about your health and care.
Your family or close friends may need to help make decisions about your treatment and care if you become very ill. Talking to them in advance can help them feel more prepared and confident about supporting your wishes.
Talking to your care team
Thinking ahead can also help you have better conversations with your doctor, nurse or care worker.
You may wish to talk about:
- what matters most to you
- how you would like to be cared for if your health changes
- who you would want involved in decisions about your care
- any worries, preferences or practical needs you may have
You can change your mind
What matters to you may change over time, especially if your health or personal circumstances change.
If this happens, you can update any information you have given to your care team.
